5 laps to go (あと５周) になる直前、グランドスタンド前 最終でトップに立った佐藤は、
Team Penske の Castroneves を相手に 渾身の走りでポジションをキープ、
Honda vs Chevrolet (シボレー) の構図を演じることに。
Tail to Nose (Eng. : Nose to Tail)、Castroneves が必死になって喰らいついて来るも、
彼は１コーナーで アウト側から佐藤を追い抜こうとしたが、佐藤はこれを交わし、
二人は、残り３周に賭けることとなった。
結果、佐藤は 最後の５周をトップで守り抜き、"2017 Indy 500" で勝利を飾った。

Monaco GP を休場してでも Indy に賭けた Fernando Alonso は、レース前半の半ばで
トップに立つ等、その後の入れ替わりは有ったにせよ、常に上位を保ちながらレースを進めた。
ところが、あと20周を残した時点でエンジン・ブローの為にリタイアを余儀なくされる。
でも彼は 再びインディーに戻る と語った。
Alonso は今回の経験値から、彼の頭の中に Indy 500 の勝利を描く事が出来たに違いない。
