19日、Red Bull と Honda は 2019年の F1シーズンから "Aston Martin Red Bull Racing" に
ホンダが F1 用のパワーユニットを供給する事について合意した旨 発表した。

Honda は既に今季から Toro Rosso に PU(パワーユニット) の供給を始めており、
チーム名も "Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda" としている。
来季からは トロロッソの親チームである Aston Martin Red Bull Racing にも PU の供給を
開始する事になる。

レッドブルは グループ傘下のトロロッソを通じて、今季のトロロッソとホンダの連携や
ホンダの技術と開発力等について つぶさに "観察" し、リサーチを出来る立場にあった。
レッドブルは 来季の PU を決定するにあたって ルノーから決断を迫られながらも、
十分な検討を重ねて決断を下したものと見られる。
ホンダにしても この決断を受け、腹をくくった決意で 今後の開発に臨む事を迫られる。
レッドブルとの契約期間は 当面 2年間だ。 この間に 上位チームであるメルセデスと
フェラーリに肩を並べなければならないのは明らかで、総力を挙げて取り組む事になるだろう。
また ホンダの 山本雅史によれば、"トロロッソとの関係は これまでと変わらない" とし、
ワークスとカスタマーという関係ではなく、三者は同等な関係を保つと考える意向である事
を強調している。 この様な "理想的な" 状況を創り上げるのは 至難の業(ワザ) ではあるが、
"ホンダなら やってくれる" という周囲の期待に どこまで応えられるかについては、
今後の推移を見守る必要があろう。
また トロロッソとは "ワークス契約" をしており、今後 レッドブルも含めてどの様な契約形態に
なるのかは まだ定かでない。
(レギュレーションでは、同一のパワーユニットを供給しなくてはならない という縛りがある。)
よって Red Bull Racing の新たなチーム名については、今後の状況を見定める事になろう。
尚、レッドブルの F1マシンを開発するのは "Aston Martin Red Bull Racing" と表裏一体にある
"Red Bull Technology" で、チームの本拠地でもある 英国の Milton Keynes に在り、
ホンダ F1 の拠点も 同所に在って、両社の距離は 数キロしか離れていない。
今後の展開についての利便性も大きいだろう。
